Can anyone tell me what the River Brosna in Offaly is like.
I'll be in that part of the world in a few weeks , with time to spare, so a bit of info on put-in, get-outs etc would be appreciated.
Thanks
Conal

Hi Conal,

the Brosna is a nice quiet run for the most part. It does have a lot of new weirs on it though, so you'll have to do a bit of portaging.

The best start point is at Lilliput Adventure Centre, close to Mullingar. For directions see here: http://www.lilliputadventure.com/directions.html. It does rise from Lough Owel, but I don't know anything about it at that point.

You can get on at the jetty there, and the entrance to the river is just to the right of that.

Your next point of access in Ballynagore Town. There's a bridge there and a bit of a trickle, but you should be able to hop out just at the picnic benches after the bridge.

The river narrows here and you'll probably have to be careful of barbed wire, overhanging trees, and the water being a little bit too shallow to paddle, so take it handy over that stretch.

Your next town is Kilbeggan. You should get a nice view of Locke's Distillery as you paddle through the town.

After this is unknown to me, but from what I've heard it can be quite shallow and quite overgrown, so the trip could be a lot of work.

The other towns along the way are

- Clara
- Ballycumber
- Ferbane
- Shannonharbour

Have a look here to get a rough idea of the route: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8& ... 4db8e95a30

If you're basing yourself around Tullamore maybe give the guys in Tullamore Canoe Club a shout on tuccmail@gmail.com or have a look at their website www.tucc.ie They do a lot of canoeing and might accompany you if you like.

Best of luck
John

John,
Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.
I've emailed Tullamore CC, as you suggested.
I could be wrong but I would expect Ferbane to Shannon Harbour to have the most water, especially after all this rain.
If anyone is paddling in the vicinity anytime between Aug 17th-22 I'd be glad to join them ( though I am not sure yet if I'll have a boat )
Regards
Conal
