CANI guide says there is camping at Crom Castle. Do any of our northern friends have a contact to book camping for a group.
If so, can you mail daveandangieatioldotie.
Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave

Crom Castle is part of the National Trust so you could Google their details that way.
Their phone number is 028 67738118. Its a cracking place for what you are after, see this thread from SOTP.

Thanks Big Al
The estate office is not open till March so I guess I have a bit of time! Are you aware of anyone setting a canoe orienteering event in the area recently (if ever). Its one of the ideas I have for the weekend. Dave

I haven't heard of anything like that yet. But I will be at a meeting for the LCO's next monday night and I can ask the LCO for Fermanagh if they have any plans for such an event. Its certainly a good idea, and one that would I could see being developed on some of the other trails too.

One thing I would like to know is how many people do you envisage attending the event in June? Its just that the campsite at Crom is quite small. However, I do remember hearing somewhere that the scouts used Crom for a big meet, and they were given permission to camp near the old castle ruins. This would be super venue for canoeists and worth inquiring about, although its quite a hike to the toilet facilities. I'll try to dig out some more photos of the campsite and castle for you.

I've just gotten this from Crom Estate:
Hi David
Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding camping and orienteering course at Crom. I see you are interested in the first weekend in June.(6th,7th, 8th June) That date is fine.

We have a small campsite with capacity for approx 10 tents maybe a few more if small tents. The cost is £10 per tent per night, this gives you use of the toilet/shower facilities and hot water. As far as the base for the orienteering course is concerned that is fine, I take it that you would be setting all up for this.

Please let me know if you would like to make a booking for the campsite or if I can be of any further help

Regards

Sharon

So I need to get an idea of numbers intending to travel. If more than 10 tents worth, I'll need to get alternate camping options. Can you post here if interested in travelling for the weekend. I will be on Lough Erne May week end and can sus out other options then, but if we are many early notification to any camp sites will help.

If I can make it down to this, I will wild camp somewhere locally so wont need a camping site at Crom.

I haven't been able to find anything about an orienteering course but I think it should be quite easy to set one up. It could even be done along the lines of a treasure hunt if you can't get your hands on the proper gear for the way points. There are enough places around the estate that front on to the water to set up a trail and I could meet you down there in May to help set it up for the June meeting.

June Bank Holiday

Postby Dave Ballesty on Wed May 07, 2008 8:46 pm

OK I was in Crom Castle at the weekend. Great site on the water, but limited if we have big numbers. Just up the water is the Share Campsite. They will give us our own space if we have numbers.
So I need to know how many intend to travel.

Please post here.
Please ask any other open boater if they have replied ......

I am double booked for the June weekend so I won't be able to make it.

The Share center is a great place although it can get a bit rowdy if there are a lot of youth groups on site. They also have a camp site on Trannish Island nearby which might be worth inquiring about. It would be more of a wild camp but still close enough to Share to make use of some of their facilities.

Due to the lack of take up - none, I am not going ahead with the orienteering aspect of this trip. I hope to get along for the weekend anyway, so may see you there.

Hi Dave,

sorry I can't make it. Hope you have a good weekend anyway. Fair play for organising it all the same. A lot of work goes into these weekends.
