Canoe Permits Killarny Lakes

Postby David Perry on Tue Jun 24, 2008 1:36 pm

I noticed there are now signs up on the lakes at Killarny stating that canoes only allowed with permits?

I assume that this might be to prevent the spread of Zebra Mussles.

Anyone any more information on permits - how much are they, whats involved etc.,?

I think you have needed permits for a good while now but they did not enforce it that much, If you contact the guys in cappanalea im sure they can inform you on how to go about getting a permit.
I think you have to clean your boat and gear at the get on and get off points of the lake not totally sure though.
Hope this helps

As an occasional Killarney paddler I should have mentioned this earlier,
There is no charge. It is, as mentioned "in order to avoid the introduction of alien species such as zebra mussels and flora such as pond weed etc"
and people from Tullamore !
On signing the permit you also agree not to camp in the park etc. As this route is one of the best around .The attitude of policymakers is starkly contrasting with that of those up North who have established canoe trails.
The rangers issueing /checking the permits however are very agreeable.

update
The situation now is locals only can get a year long permit everyone else must provide receipt for powerwash of canoe on the day they wish to canoe for which a free permit must be obtained from rangers.

Seems like a pain but actually works ok. Rangers no is 064 6635215

Beautiful canoeing
