In researching the possibilities of holding such an event, I spoke with Waterways Ireland. They were very excited about the possibility of canoe orienteering courses being set up, but I was "too late to apply for funding this year".
While my interest was for a once off event I thought that maybe some of you who are club or centre focused may follow up on this possible source of money.
I also note that Bord Failte are looking to fund sustainable activities, which a permanent course may be described as.
